Slash Commands

Commands are user-invoked shortcuts that execute specific actions.

Built-in Commands

CommandDescriptionWhen to Use
/helpShow help informationGet started, learn commands
/btwEphemeral side question — doesn't pollute main contextQuick tangent questions
/chromeConfigure Chrome integrationBrowser automation
/clearClear conversation historyStart fresh, reduce context
/diffInteractive diff viewer. In the fullscreen TUI (v2.1.260+) it opens a diff panel beside the conversation that stays open and refreshes each time Claude edits a file or runs a command; the classic renderer opens the viewer in place of the prompt insteadReview changes
/configView/edit configurationCustomize behavior
/statusShow session statusCheck current state
/agentsRemoved: the wizard went in v2.1.198 and the command left the / menu and /help in v2.1.281 — ask Claude to create or manage subagents, or edit .claude/agents/Manage subagents by asking Claude
/skillsList available skillsSee auto-invoke capabilities
/hooksList configured hooksDebug automation
/insightsAnalyze session patternsSession optimization
/install-slack-appInstall Claude Slack appSlack integration
/keybindingsCustomize keyboard shortcutsKey customization

/rewindRewind to checkpointUndo changes, explore alternatives
/checkpointManage checkpointsSave/restore states
/costShortcut alias that opens the cost tab of /usage (v2.1.118+)Monitor spending
/contextShow context window usageManage conversation length
/exportExport conversationSave for reference
/usage-creditsConfigure extra usage limits (renamed from /extra-usage in v2.1.144; old name still works as alias)Rate limit management
/feedbackSubmit feedback or bug reportReport issues
/loginAuthenticate with AnthropicAccess features
/logoutSign outSwitch accounts
/sandboxToggle sandbox modeSafe command execution
/doctorRun diagnosticsTroubleshoot issues
/reload-pluginsReload installed plugins. Since v2.1.221 most installs activate immediately; only needed when the install summary says Run /reload-plugins to activate. Available in headless sessions since v2.1.260+, so it appears in the Claude Code Desktop and SDK command listsPlugin management
/reload-skillsRe-scan skill directories without restarting (v2.1.152)Skill management
/workflowsView running and completed dynamic workflow runs (v2.1.154)Multi-agent orchestration

/teleport (alias /tp)Resume a Claude Code on the web session in this terminal; opens a picker. Requires a claude.ai subscriptionContinue work remotely
/desktopOpen Claude Desktop appSwitch to desktop interface
/themeChange color theme; v2.1.118 added custom named themes via ~/.claude/themes/<name>.json (plugins can ship a themes/ dir)Customize appearance
/usageCanonical command for usage/cost/stats — merged /cost and /stats into a single tabbed view (v2.1.118); as of v2.1.149 the cost view breaks spending down by category (skills, subagents, plugins, per-MCP-server). In the VSCode extension (v2.1.174), the /usage (Account & usage) dialog adds an attribution breakdown — cache misses, long-context cost, subagents, and per-skill / per-agent / per-plugin / per-MCP usage over 24h and 7d windowsMonitor quota and costs
/focusToggle focus view (distraction-free output display)Reduce visual noise during long tasks
/forkCopy the conversation into a new independent background session (v2.1.212+)Explore alternatives in parallel
/subtaskSpawn a forked subagent that inherits the conversation and reports back (v2.1.212+)Delegate a side task without losing your place
/statsShortcut alias that opens the stats tab of /usage (v2.1.118+)Review session metrics
/statuslineConfigure status lineCustomize status display
/stickersView session stickersFun rewards
/fastToggle fast output mode; applies to Opus 5.5 (the default since v2.1.280), Opus 5, and Opus 4.8Speed up responses
/terminal-setupConfigure terminal integrationSetup terminal features

/upgradeCheck for updatesVersion management
/team-onboardingGenerate a teammate ramp-up guide from this project's Claude Code usageOnboarding new teammates (v2.1.101)
/code-review ultraRun a cloud multi-agent code review over your current changes. /ultrareview remains as an alias; /code-review ultra is the preferred invocation. Includes 3 free runs on Pro and Max, then requires usage creditsDeep pre-merge review across multiple agents (v2.1.112)
/fewer-permission-promptsScan transcripts and propose a prioritized allowlist for common read-only toolsReduce repeat permission prompts in a project (v2.1.112)
/skill-doctorShow which loaded skills go unused and what they cost in context. Opens in the /plugin manager's Stats tab; prints as text under -pPrune skills you no longer need (v2.1.252+)

Permission Modes

Claude Code supports 6 permission modes that control how tool use is authorized.

ModeDescriptionWhen to Use
manualPrompt for each tool callStandard interactive use (renamed from default in v2.1.200; default still accepted)
acceptEditsAuto-accept file edits, prompt for othersTrusted editing workflows
planRead-only tools only, no writesPlanning and exploration
autoAll actions, with background safety classifier checksLong tasks, reducing prompt fatigue
bypassPermissionsSkip all permission checksCI/CD, headless environments
dontAskSkip tools that would require permissionNon-interactive scripting

Note: auto mode requires an eligible plan, model, and provider — see 09-advanced-features/. Use bypassPermissions only in trusted, sandboxed environments.

Subagents

Specialized AI assistants with isolated contexts for specific tasks.

Nested spawning is on by default, depth 3 (v2.1.219): Subagents can spawn their own subagents up to three layers below the main conversation. Set CLAUDE_CODE_MAX_SUBAGENT_SPAWN_DEPTH to change the limit, or 1 to disable nesting. (History: v2.1.172–v2.1.216 nested by default up to 5 layers with no way to change it; v2.1.217 made nesting opt-in at depth 1; v2.1.219 set the default to 3.) See 04-subagents/README.md for the Agent(agent_type) syntax that restricts which subagents a given subagent may spawn.

Bundled Skills

SkillDescriptionWhen Auto-Invoked
/batchRun prompts on multiple filesBatch operations
/claude-apiBuild apps with Claude APIAPI development
/debugDebug failing tests/errorsDebugging sessions
/design (research preview, v2.1.233+)Create a multi-artboard design canvas — UI mockups, screen flows, landing pages, posters — refined visually instead of in code. Pro/Max/Team/EnterpriseDesigning a screen or page you would rather tweak by hand than in HTML
/fewer-permission-promptsScan transcripts and propose a prioritized allowlistReduce repeat permission prompts
/loopRun prompts on intervalRecurring tasks
/run (v2.1.145+)Launch this project's app to see a change runningVerifying a change in the real app
/run-skill-generator (v2.1.145+)Teach /run//verify how to handle a specific projectFirst-time project setup for /run
/code-review [low|medium|high|xhigh|max|ultra] [--fix] [--comment] [pr#|branch|path]Review the current diff — or a PR, branch, or path — for correctness bugs. --fix applies findings, --comment posts them as inline PR comments. With no level given it reuses the last one you typed (v2.1.223). Lower effort levels moved to a background subagent in v2.1.218; high, xhigh, and max followed in v2.1.232, so review output no longer fills the conversationAfter writing code, before landing a PR
/simplify (distinct again since v2.1.154)Cleanup-only review (reuse / simplification / efficiency / altitude) that applies the fixes; does not hunt bugsTidying code without a bug hunt
/verify (v2.1.145+)Build, run, and observe the app to confirm a fix worksValidating a fix end-to-end

Auto Mode on third-party providersAvailable by default on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform, Microsoft Foundry, and signed-in Claude apps gateway sessions, where the supported models are Claude Sonnet 5 or later, Opus 4.7 or later, Haiku 5.5 (v2.1.293+), and the Fable models (opt-in required v2.1.158–v2.1.206; removed in v2.1.207 — CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_AUTO_MODE is still accepted but has no effect)Shift+Tab to cycle to it, or --permission-mode auto
Immediate Dialog Commands/permissions can be opened while Claude is working (rule changes apply to the rest of the turn), and the /add-dir, /autocompact, /theme, /help, /config, and /advisor dialogs open mid-turn in the fullscreen TUI instead of queuing until Claude finishes responding (/bug already did this since v2.1.232) (v2.1.234)Run one of these commands while Claude is working. See Slash Commands
CLAUDE_CODE_PROJECT_DIR_NAMEEnv var controlling per-project transcript directory naming (v2.1.234)Set in your shell/env before launching Claude Code. See CLI
Goal Check-In ThresholdWhile a /goal is active, Claude checks in with a status update if a background task makes no progress for 30+ minutes, instead of continuing silently; tune with CLAUDE_CODE_GOAL_CHECKIN_MINUTES, or set to 0 to disable (v2.1.234)Set CLAUDE_CODE_GOAL_CHECKIN_MINUTES=<n> alongside an active /goal. See Slash Commands
Usage-Limit Auto-ContinueClaude Code auto-continues a session when a claude.ai usage limit resets, if it was blocked on that limit (v2.1.234)On by default; turn it off in /config → "Continue automatically at usage limit". See Advanced Features
spellcheck settingUnderlines misspelled words in the prompt input using whichever of aspell, hunspell, or ispell is on your PATH; off by default (v2.1.235)Install a checker, then set "spellcheck": { "enabled": true } in ~/.claude/settings.json. User, --settings, and managed settings only — ignored in project settings. See Advanced Features
